Our values explained:
Progression
Progression (or positive progress) is about recognising the importance to human beings and human institutions of moving forwards. Stay still, either as a person or an organisation, and you risk becoming stagnant, closed-minded and stuck in a rut, which in turn can lead to depression. When we learn how to find our own level in the winds of change, neither resisting the flow of life nor drifting aimlessly along, but instead by navigating the waters, then we can move forward at an appropriate pace.
Purpose
The value of purpose applies equally to individuals as it does organisations, and in broad terms it means that people and institutions need a reason or purpose in order to function properly. This meaning is what gives people and organisations a sense of direction, which feeds into the value of progression which recognises our innate need for forward motion. Bottom line - do things for a reason. Results will be better and people will warm to your commitment to achieve something.
Possibility
Every single minute of every single day that you are alive and breathing brings with it an incomprehensible amount of possibilities. Seeing possibilities is an attitude of mind, an outlook on life, and a characteristic that can bring tremendous value to the world of business too. Possibility-Based Thinking is crucial to business success in the 21st Century.
Positivity
This goes much deeper than the Positive Thinking 'school' which became fashionable in the 1980s and 1990s. The kind of positivity we advocate is about adding value, contributing something worthwhile, making something better, adding something more, things which generate other things, Common Gain, new combinations, ideas, creations, bringing something new or different into the world, and so on.
Passion
Passion and the emotions are often second graded in the harsh realities of day-to-day life. In business, talk of passion can again be confusing and misleading; although it is a much sought-after quality of good leaders, it absolutely and categorically cannot be manufactured. It requires genuine heart-felt emotion and is surely one of the noblest of human expressions. In this day and age when so many companies, products, and even people, either copy what everyone else is doing or simply strive for material gain, nothing is more inspiring than real and genuine passion.
Potential
You as an individual or as an organisation have not yet even come close to fulfilling your potential! How can I say that with such assurance? Because your potential is way beyond anything I can put into words, and probably more than anything you or I can even understand. If we really think about it, your potential or what you are capable of is constantly changing and, like the possibilities of life, your potential grows and transforms every single second you are alive! It can't be measured accurately (some would say at all), and no other human being can tell you what the limits of your potential are!
Vitality
Encompassing these six key values is the one ultimate goal which I believe companies need to focus on as a broader motive or priority than merely survival itself - the "Vitality" motive. Vitality is 'aliveness'. The spirit of vitality runs through all six of these values and is in many cases the pre-requisite for all of them. As adults, especially in the world of business, this child-like sense of wonder and enthusiasm, this search for something better, is pummelled out of us by the day to day battering caused by the struggle and disappointment which characterises reality for many of us. The task then is to rekindle that spirit and look within ourselves to find again that lust for life which we had as children.
